Slice of Life – Time to Renew

We have been hearing the word, renew, quite a bit lately. We use it most often in our conversations with each other about books we have on loan from the library. Last week, while waiting in the airport, we decided to look it up:

What a great word! It is such an important word for educators. Each year we begin again.

A new class of hearts and minds.

A new community to build and connect.

A new journey of curriculum to explore with new students.

A new set of questions, passions, and interests.

A new set of hopes, fears and dreams.

Each year we need to bring the same level of energy, respect and care for our students. We need to set the highest expectations for our colleagues, our students and ourselves. We need to inspire and motivate our students to learn, fail and succeed.

The summer always goes so quickly. It is easy to get caught up in our to-do lists and begin planning for September. We hope one thing on your list is time to renew. We have the privilege to collaborate with so many educators. We are always overwhelmed at the level of dedication and commitment. We have never met a more hard-working group of individuals. Teaching is all encompassing –mental, physical, emotional and social. How can one give so fully without time for renewal?

In this spirit, we plan to take the next three weeks for renewal. We will be spending time with family and friends, traveling and walking on the beach. We will not be blogging, tweeting or pinning during the month of August (with the exception of #10for10PB). We plan to be back on September 1 with a #T4T twitter chat. Until then, we hope you find time for you.

Just yesterday I was telling a friend, “I love being a teacher in July” for the very reasons you state. It is my month to meet friends over long lunches and take a trip and read lots! Thanks for naming it for me – it is my renewal month! Enjoy your time!!

Perfect advice! I am relaxing, discovering new things and building those reserves for the upcoming school year. Listening to European teachers enforces my right to relax and enjoy life! Happy vacationing!

This is such a timely post for me, personally. I haven’t had the opportunity to turn off the “teacher/coach” brain yet this summer. I was just looking at August’s calendar last night, realizing that I have one week where I have absolutely nothing to do. I am constantly reminding my teachers about the importance of “me” time. I need to get better at practicing what I preach in that area.

    Enjoy your time of renewal!

I am planning a renewal too, on my way to the beach for a couple of weeks, part of which will be staff week to which I won’t be returning. I wrote a bit about retirement today, and your post touched me in two ways, so much talk about returning & I won’t be, but it’s time for a renewal of a different sort. Happy times to you both!

I love the energy at the beginning of the year. I think it’s the time to renew that makes it possible.

This is so important to our profession. I have been very wrapped up, as we all are, in all of my summer work projects and I was just telling my daughter about my plan to take some time off to renew in August as well. Enjoy! See you in September!
