07 Feb Slice of Life: Being a Sports Fan is More Than the Sports
When my husband and I first decided to settle in Boston, I panicked. I was raised as a New York sports fan. We were season ticket-holders to the Yankees and the Jets and made sure to catch several Rangers and Knicks games each year. One year, we even spent Easter Sunday at a Yankee double header. We were hard-core.
When I found myself the mother of two, living in Boston, I had to make a decision. Boston is a great sports town. Boston fans are like no other. I was faced with a dilemma.
Was it more important to give my boys the opportunity to loves sports in this great sports town or have them love my teams?
In the end, I sold my soul and raised them to be Boston fans.
While I have loved every minute of this journey with my kids (I credit the Red Sox breaking the curse in 2004 to my conversion), this year has been priceless. This year has been about more than victory. This year has been the culmination of so many lessons we have tried to instill in them about sports, life and humanity.
First, this man
says it all. David Ortiz, Big Papi, is the image of sports for me with my children. He has been a defining figure and a loved player for their entire lives. We had the privilege of being at his last game. While the Sox lost and did not advance, I am grateful my sons witnessed the last home game of one of their sports heroes. I know my sons will never forget the grace and sportsmanship that David Ortiz exhibited that night. I know they will never forget the feeling of admiration in the stands that night. I know they will never forget his words, his smile, and his presence that evening. They will always remember.
And then, this team
Could a mother write a better story of teamwork, perseverance and resilience? My boys are Boston fans through and through – they learned to transition to a rally cap in the bleachers of Fenway, to believe anything is possible, and to know, in Boston, it is never over until it is over.
Thank you Boston – I sold my soul to the right town!
