Slice of Life: This Book…. a World of Possibilities #SOL17

We love to open up leadership professional development sessions with children’s literature.  It is a wonderful opportunity to share new books; model accountable talk and explore a theme applicable to the work we are doing as leaders.  This week we tried out a new title and loved it!

After the Fall explores themes of resiliency, growth mindset and perseverance.   The leadership team connected with strong feelings:

the hopes and dreams:

the setbacks:

and the possibilities:

We won’t give the ending away…

This book has layers of meanings and helped us remember that change is never easy. It is not about achieving your goal without setbacks.  True success is not about the missteps or the victories, it is about next steps and recoveries.  It helped this leadership group accept there will never be one perfect recommendation or strategic plan.  Change is messy and difficult at times.  It is also exciting and filled with unimagined discoveries.

We love this book.  We knew it would be a sure hit with kids and now we know it is also great to use with adults in leadership and professional development sessions.  We are adding it to our coaching bag – it is one we want to have on hand at all times.

If you want a preview, check out this book trailer and this interview with the author Dan Santat.

My kiddos reviewed this book for our Mock Caldecott work. We have not voted yet, but I think it will be the hands-down winner. Loved the message. So many layers to it. I can see it being a powerful PD tool.

This book is in our Mock Caldecott too. We were lucky enough that Margie Myers-Culver read it to us via Skype before it was published and have loved it since. I sure hope it gets a medal in February, but regardless, it is a keeper!
